Who we are

Welcome to This Irish Family.  Our website address is: http://thisirishfamily.com.  This policy is written to help you understand how we obtain and use any personal data you provide to us through your use of our website. We have tried to write it in plain language, so that it is easy to understand. If you have any queries regarding your privacy, please email us at thisirishfamily@gmail.com.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

We may also link to other websites from this site through social media buttons such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. We are not responsible for the content or privacy policies of third party ‘linked sites’ and you must be aware that they may collect personal data from you which is beyond our control. The privacy practices of these sites will be governed by their own privacy policies.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics and online security software to monitor traffic to our website. You have the right to opt out of Google Analytics tracking so that your use of our website does not process any of your data. You can download an opt-out browser add-on from Google tools if you wish to do this.

Who we share your data with

We share website data with our web host, Google Analytics and our online security software. We do not and will not share your personal data with other companies for marketing purposes, or for any other reason, unless required to do so by law.

We also occasionally share statistical data from the information gathered by analytics with parties who wish to engage with us for blogging/writing assignments. By statistical data we mean broad statements like:

‘In May we had 3,000 website hits.’

‘Our main audience demographic is women between 20-30 years old’

This type of statistical information is generalised based on the data gleaned by Google Analytics. No specific personal data is communicated in exchanges in these instances.

You can opt-out of Google Analytics tracking at any time, should you wish to do so. This link will take you to a page where you can download an ‘opt-out’ browser addon.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

We delete email communications periodically as a matter of course.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Additional information

Lawful basis

We process personal data under the following basis:

Consent: Those visiting our website have chosen to do so and have access to this Privacy Policy to make sure they understand how we are obtaining data through our analytics and security provider when they do so. Those leaving comments will need to provide their consent for us to process their data in this way.

How we protect your data

We have enabled an online security firewall and are in the process of securing the site via SSL, to encrypt communications between the server and the user’s computer. The number of administrators with access to our website is kept to a minimum.

What data breach procedures we have in place

We have enabled an online software that alerts us to any attempts or attacks on our website via email. We monitor traffic and site access regularly and are committed to protecting your data. In the event of a personal data breach, we will investigate what has happened, record and respond appropriately, including establishing the severity of the breach to the rights and freedoms of those affected. We will inform the relevant body within 72 hours if we deem the breach to be severe, as well as informing those affected by it with our findings and next steps.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

We sometimes look at the user profiles of our website visitors to see who is visiting our site, what they are reading and what kind of content they seem to most enjoy. If you do not consent to us processing your personal data in this way then you have the option to opt out of Google Analytics tracking as mentioned above, or by enabling a ‘Do Not Track’ request in your browser’s advanced settings. This may or may not work with our security provider, but is an option you have at your disposal.
